Recently, orkut rolled out just another feature.
What is that feature ? It is “Ask Friends”.
What is this for ?
Well, you can simply ask a question which will be visible to all your friends under “Ask friends” Section.

This was really important ie. having some check on loads of email we recieve daily because of ORKUT. Though I had created another account for this so I was not worried at all.
But recently google ie. Orkut really took some nice step.
Here is the list google provided :
#1 Until now, you’ve gotten a message whenever someone you invited as a friend has accepted your request. Now the default for this notification is off. If you’d like to change it, go to settings, then the notification settings tab and check the box next to “new friend approvals.”
#2 You receive a message when you’re invited to join a community. If you’re getting a lot of these, we figured you might like to turn it off. To do so go to the notification settings tab and and uncheck the boxes next to “community invite notifications.”
#3 To prevent unwanted spam, you can no longer send messages to ALL your orkut friends at once. Now that we improved our feature to group friends, we thought that you can start using them to address only those who you know will want to receive your message.
#4 Messages to communities will only exist for moderated communities. Many of us join these because we want to associate the name and picture of the community and have it on our profile, but we don’t want to participate actively. This is common, and we call these “badge communities.” Strangely, sometimes people think it’s a good idea to email ALL members of these (often huge and unmoderated) badge communities, which translates into a whole lot of spammy email.
Did you see, orkut is now really quick in adopting new features which were missing from long time, I think after implementation of new look to ORKUT they are now more comfortable to add new features to orkut. Another new feature added :
I missed this one from day one I joined orkut. Infact we are using such feature from long in messenger like Yahoo where whenever we a buddy, we can give a brief introduction about ourself making it easy for both for further friendship.

If you have noticed , then there is new feature now in orkut, it will actually allow you to disallow scraps for people who are not your friend.
So now you can really stop other unwanted people to not to offend your scrapbook, can be really helpful in many cases, this feature will protect privacy at a very high level as far as I think of, I am not going to discuss all this here but really cool feature. Read the rest of this entry »
While replying a scrap, you might notice a new feature added to Orkut. Most probably Orkut India. You will see a list of Languages in drop down menu and when you will select one language from that menu, you will see its keyboard online just below scrap, so you can type easily.

Orkut just added a nice small feature, that is [S][A][M] & [T][E][M].
Lets discuss:
Actually you will see [S][A][M] attached with profile or name of friends and [T][E][M] with name of community or community listings. They are shortcuts for certain links on orkut related to that user or community.
So lets see what they actually do :

Orkut recently introduced yet another new feature, by this feature you will have a list on your ORKUT PROFILE HOMEPAGE showing who has done changes in their profile. It may include notifications of modification in their profile description, adding new photos to their profile, receiving new testimonial or uploading new youtube videos. So you will have list of recent changes done by your friend in front of you.
You may have seen many people announcing in their name area that new photo uploaded etc, I think this the reason for Google / Orkut guys to roll out this feature and is the source for inspiration for them.

India has the third largest userbase on orkut & hence orkut pays a nice attention to Indian Events.
I am constantly seeing Orkut Logo being used for while is in tri-color as well as it resembles Hindi ie. Devnagari script layout in design. All in all, its good looking as well its a nice move to make Indian feel special.
A worthy enough to mention here.
Many might be knowing about it already but its worthy to share it here.

This news is not so new but still its important enough to feature here.
According to the SocialStream Project website:
Directed to help improve the online community orkut, the project’s scope was not to simply redesign the interface. Our team considered how online social networking could bring greater value to users, especially for ages above twenty. After initial brainstorming and research, we chose to focus on the effects of a new model for online social networking: a unified social network that, as a service, provides social data to many other applications. Our user research examined needs related to online as well as offline social networking and considered how they related to a unified social network service model. Through this user research we identified a set of archetypes that represent common behavior patterns that existed across multiple study participants and also formulated a summarized list of their high level needs.
Lately, Orkut (one of the service from google about social networking) launches its official blog. Hope now you can got to know about new from their blog quickly though after launch of blog, there is nothing really new to mention there.

Orkut recently launched a form where you can report about stolen communities..
This is what they say:
Hello to everyone in orkut land I know it’s frustrating that some people on orkut don’t play nice and try to steal other people’s communities
When this happens, please write into the Help Center for individual help.
It takes a lot of time to investigate these cases and attempt to restore communities, so it’s not very efficient to post them here, with only one Guide here to help out!
