Google Just added most awaited feature to Gmail.
It is IMAP.

Google says :

Sync your inbox across devices instantly and automatically. Whether you read or write your email on your phone or on your desktop, changes you make to Gmail will be seen from anywhere you access your inbox.

Those who don’t know what Imap is ?

What is IMAP

nternet Message Access Protocol (IMAP).

With an IMAP account, your incoming email remains on your ISP’s mail server until you delete it. You can read and manage your email from different locations. Your In, Out, Sent, and Trash mailboxes, plus any mailboxes you create, are visible to you no matter what computer you use to access your mail account, and you can work with your messages as if they were stored on your computer. For this reason, you may want to use an IMAP account if you usually read your email at more than one computer.

You can control whether messages are stored on your local hard disk. For example, you can choose to download messages only when you read them, or download attachments only when you open a message. This can allow for better performance if you use a telephone modem to connect to the Internet.

How to use Google / Gmail IMAP

All you need to first enable IMAP, for that
Goto —> Gmail Account –> Settings –> Forwarding & Pop/IMAP –> IMAP Access –> Enable IMAP

Google Imap service

Next is to configure your email clients.

Google has provided a comprehensive list here.

I know many mail service provide same feature, even I was using same on Yahoo 2-3 years ago. But as we all know how much I love gmail. I always wished that if my personal mails can be like gmail.

Problem of Spam in privately owned domains

The worst about personal mail is that you get lots of spam, why ? As you have to send letter to your site member, you have to show email address to many unknown people so that they can contact you back. All results in your email address exposed to lots of spammers.

On one of my such site, I had 5 email accounts to deal with my site visitors as well as to have business related emails too. But as time passed, I used to get around 600-700 spam mails daily on all mails together, I had to check mails daily in order to sort out mail of my use. I created lots of filter in my mail client software, it was able to sort out spam mails but still things were not working. I was loosing many important mails and even because of those spam mails, my one site got messed up as its all work was based on email.
Then I finally decided to use gmail to work upon all mails and to fight spam for me.. as well the interface we all love.

How to use Gmail to retrive other POP mails

As its your private domain mail so obviously it should have POP facility ie. you can download mail to your computer using email client like outlook express or evolution.
We are actually going to fetch email from your domain’s mail server to gmail account. For that you need following information:

1.Your Username (usually username@yourdomain.com)
2. Password
3. Mail server address (usually mail.yourdomain.com)
4. Pop Port (usually 110)

Now in your gmail.. Goto ..
Settings –> Accounts –> Add another mail account
Add other mail
