Valmiki Jayanti Festival Information and Details- About Sri Balmik
The greatest sage of all times who has written the great epic,’Ramayan’ which is based on the life of Lord Rama and Sita is remembered on his birthday which falls on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindi month of Ashwina. In 2009, the date of Valmiki Jayanti is October 4. He is also known as Balmiki.
He is a great example for people who want o reform their ways, as Valmiki was a feared dacoit of that time but his meeting with a saint transformed him and today he is remembered as Maharishi Valmiki. He gave shelter to Sita when she was pregnant with Luv and Kush. He educated both the children under him.
The festival is celebrated much among the repressed class as he to is said to have belonged to the repressed class. He is well known as the “Adi Kavi” or the first poet. On Valmiki Jayanti people offer special prayers and processions are taken out. Some devotees also go to temples and narrate the Ramanyan in his memory. Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated with immense joy and excitement in Madhya Pradesh. There are many temples in MP dedicated to Valmiki. The celebration of Jayanti starts early in the morning as people from far and wide gather at the temples with flowers and other offerings for the sage.
