The day of Lakshmi-Puja falls on the dark night of Amavasya. It is a very important occasion for the Hindu religion as Lakshmi also known as Shri, Bhoodevi, Shreedevi, is the goddess of wealth,fortune, power, luxury, beauty, fertility, and auspiciousness. All material accepts of the earth belong to her and people pray to her for granting them wealth and success.
Lakshmi was the daughter of the sage Bhrigu who as taking refuge in an ocean of milk. During the churning of the ocean by the goda and demons, lakshimi is said to be born. She is the wife of Lord Vishnu who took her from the ocean to heaven. She is the possessor of great beauty, light, good fortune and wealth. It is said that she too accompanied her husband in various human forms of Sita, Rukmini and Padma.
Hindus worship Goddess Lakshmi in houses and temples. A special worship is offered to Her annually on the auspicious day of Diwali, with religious rituals and colorful ceremonies specifically devoted to Her. She is worshipped to remove troubles that prevent from starting a spiritual path or business. She is said to be swarna-hasta meaning golden-handed and pores out riches to the community. She is worshiped by her devotees for success in the field of knowledge as well, so that the wealth received can be put to good use. That’s is the reason Lakshmi is worshiped before Saraswati(goddess of knowledge)
Lakshmi puja is performed during Diwali, the festival of lights. According to tradition people put small oil lamps outside their homes on Diwali and hope Lakshmi will come to bless them. It is believed that Lakshmi (wealth) goes only to those houses which are clean and where the people are hardworking. This is also the reason why the broom is worshiped on this day with offerings of haldi and kumkum. Lamps are lit in the evening to welcome the goddess. Despite the fact that this day falls on an amavasya day it is regarded as the most auspicious.
Lakshmi Puja consists of a combined puja of five deities: Ganesha is worshiped at the beginning of every auspicious act as Vighneshvara; Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped in her three forms - Mahalakshmi (the goddess of wealth and money), Mahasaraswati (the goddess of books and learning), and Mahakali; Kuber (the treasurer of the gods) is also worshiped.
After Lakshmi Puja, lamps are lit all over the house. This diwali let us to light the lamps of love, peace and harmony in our lives.
