The term Lailatul Qadar is made of two words. In Arabic, Lailat means night and Qadr means honour and dignity. Therefore, the term Lailatul Qadr refers to the night of honour and dignity. This is one of the holiest and most blessed nights, which is likely to occur on one of the odd nights on the last ten days of Ramadhaan, i.e the 21st, 23rd,25th, 27th or 29th.
Most of the muslims belive it to be on the 27th night. The reward of worship on this night is better than the worship of a thousand months of worship, equivalent to a person’s lifetime. On this night Muslims all over the world perform the night prayers, recite the Qura’n, and pray as much as possible. As the noble quran was sent down on this night, its excellence is great and those who cling to it will have a life of honour and nobility and raise themselves to the summit of everlasting life.
In the Holy Quran, one surah is especially given with regard to the importance of this night. In it Allah says
” Verily! We have sent it (this Qur’aan) down in the Night of Decree (Lailatul-Qadr). And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. Therein descend the angels and the Rooh (i.e. Gabriel) by Allaah’s Permission with all Decrees, Peace! until the appearance of dawn.” (Al-Qadr 97: 1-5)
On this prestigious and auspicious night, muslims offer prayer all night long and can sleep only after saying the morning prayers. Every minute of this night is considered to be important. In baitullah (mecca) people give tawaf( going 7 times roung the kabba). The entire month of Ramazan has high significance, each day and night have great value attached to them. But no night is like that of Lailatul Qadr. Those who have this night and derive the maximum benefit out of it are the truly lucky ones.
